HW1: Background of the Survey(Edited)



             This research is about mathematics and its application to different field like online games such as defense of the ancient (DOTA). Mathematics as a huge field of studies has its roles and functions to its applications. Dota is a popular game that applies statistical knowledge which has its great role on the game. Computations, analysis, and assumed values are present in this game. Playing DOTA has lots of advantages like it enhances your mental thinking and fast computations and probabilities. Hence, I am through with the first part of my research which is the Chapter I: the introduction. The chapter includes the background of the study, statement of the problem, significance of the study, scope and delimitation, methods and materials and definition of terms which is the difficult part of the research paper, but fortunately, I've accomplished it. This chapter will tell if the readers would be interested in your research paper because it is the advertisement of your topic.

         
             In order to finish the paper, I need to get information relevant to my topic and in order to answer the things that I don't know yet. There are questions that comes into my mind that should be answered for it has significance to my research paper. First, I need to know the advantages that players get in playing Dota. It is important to know if there are advantages that a person can get in playing this game. This can help me to know there are benefits that a person gets from this. These will also show why Dota players are good when it comes to mathematics and statistics things.Second, I need to know the factors that makes a player be better in playing the game. this would help me know why a person become a very good player not just practicing but with other things and factors. Third, I need to know reasons why players with good mathematical skills plays well compared to that less skilled players. This will help to answer what skills do players differ when playing Dota and how they are executed or used.  Lastly, How do players manage to used their mathematical skills fast even though it needs a lot of analysis and computations? This question will answer the techniques on how to think fast when you are playing Dota even though complications are there.

            Those things that I don't know can be answered by Dota players and some people with perspective about my topic. In order to get these information, I need to have surveys, interviews and research in order to get the information that I need and for me to reflect to my own experience about my research paper which probably make this research a successful one. 

              Therefore, I expect that all these questions can be answered and I expect to have a good research paper. I'm also expecting that the information that I might get to the survey that I will conduct would fill up the lacking pieces of my research paper.I hope that this survey will make my research to be more easier and effective to its readers.                              What advantages can mathematical knowledge and statistical applications provide DOTA player?

I. Definitions and applications of mathematical and statistical knowledge in DOTA

    Mathematics is the field of studies that deals with the study of quantities, numbers,equations and computations. This field is applied in things that we always do in our daily lives. This applied in online games, sports, businesses, etc. It is also defined by the School of Mathematics and Statistics as "an academic discipline and a body of knowledge that involves the study of concepts such as quantity, structure, space and change. It is an essential tool in many fields including natural science, engineering, Medicine and Social Science such as Economics and Commerce(http://www.kenyapolytechnic.ac.ke/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=158&Itemid=201). 

    On the other hand, statistics is being described as the science which is concerned with making sense out of numbers.Since numerical information plays a vital role in our daily lives, all of us can benefit from some knowledge of statistics. But complex problems call for the service of professional statisticians, most of whom have graduate training in statistics and probability because it is somewhat complicated and it needs too much understanding.

    Statistics are applied in most games and is divided in some categories. In game system, the most common used types of statistics are attributes, which is described as the common characteristics on characters or possession of natural talent; powers, described as the unique special qualities of the character or potential to learn new skills; skills, abilities learned by the character in an area or field; traits, usually defined as scope which is similar to skills but it has broad areas of expertise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistic_(role-playing_games)). However, mathematical and statistical knowledge applied in DOTA is more complicated and broad.

    Applications of mathematical and statistical knowledge are shown on the mechanics of the game such as the effect and castings of spells and magics, costs of mana and items, estimations of damage, armor and armor blockage and resistances. Buffs and item effects such as damage per seconds, area of effect and others also need applications of mathematical and statistical knowledge in the game.


II. Advantages of mathematical and statistical knowledge to DOTA players

A.   Psychological or Intellectual Advantages

       Psychological or statistical advantages are get all the things that people did and encountered    everyday because people gain learning from these. Dota players get psychological advantages from playing DOTA whenever players play the game such as improvement of critical thinking and strategic planning skills. As they play more often, players can think of strategies fast whenever crucial situations were encountered on the games. DOTA is motivated by mathematics and statistics so that players can learn computations and assumptions which is present in the game mechanics.

       However, Dota players must be mindful also of the psychological disadvantages in playing the game with such complicated computations and probabilities.Knowing the disadvantages would help players to suffer less and to learn what should be learned in the game itself.


B.    Social Advantages

        Whenever players play Dota, everyone knows that strangers are met because they intend to play and befriend these Dota players. Playing Dota will gain players some friends that they can play with whenever they saw each other or maybe at GARENA online. Players can interact and build relationship with other players because they sometimes became part of the same team so cooperation is a must.Fame is also get from these as players get to compete with other teams as social tournaments. III. FACTORS THAT MAKES A PLAYER BE BETTER AT DOTA

A.       High Critical Thinking Skill

           Critical thinking skill is the factor wherein a player cope up with crucial situations in whatever he/she is doing. It makes a player to be better because these skills is used in every games that he/she is playing especially in Dota so that the player can easily solve the situations.

           Good Leadership Skill

           Leadership skill is another factor wherein as a leader of the team, the leader must be good on leading the group on what to do in order to win the game. This skill makes a player be better because being a good leader makes the team to compete even more. A better player with good leadership skill will give strength to the team because there are instances in the game wherein the players of a team need to cooperate with each other and they needed someone to lead them.

           Professional Strategic Planning Skill

           Strategic planning skill is one of the most important factor that a player must have which provoke a professional planner. The strategies of the team must be at professional degree in order for them to win the game for sure. A player with this skill make the team stronger because this player can easily came up with effective strategies whenever there are change in plans and unexpected situation.

           Playing Experiences

           Experiences from past games are also factors to be considered in order to be a good player because experiences help the player to learn from the games that this player have previously. These playing experiences give the player knowledge about different strategies and playing techniques that were projected by some of his/her teammates or opponents in their play game. This also make a player to be more familiar of what usually happens in every game.

           Practice

           Practice is another factor that makes a player be better in playing Dota. It is the factor wherein all these skills were enhanced and developed. Practice is the thing that the player do in order to be more professional at something. IV. Disadvantages of Dota

A.         Waste of time and money

              Dota is waste of time and money because at the of each game, everyone lost their money to pay the rent for the shop. Waste of time for people who don't know and get advantages that Dota provides because instead of studying where they can really learn something, they waste their time in playing that gives them nothing because they don't feel what really is worth of their money.

B.          Harmful to health

              Playing long hours of Dota deprives a person on being active. The players who plays long hours would just burn your butt and seat not calories and fats. Spending too much time playing DOTA will lead to cardiovascular diseases, obesity, diabetes, muscular atrophy, visual problems, musculoskeletal problems, decreased immunity, and other diseases caused by sedentary lifestyle. 

C.          Destroys mental and emotional stability

              This game somehow destroys a players mental and emotional stability because swearing and trash talking with other players. bullying the weaker player is always present in this. This game is frustrating and humiliating and players also become irritable and they also forget their priorities in life.

D.         ADDICTIVE

                   If you always play Dota, it means that you are addicted to this game because you always think that if you can't let the day pass without you playing it. It just like one you've started, you can't stop it so easily I tell you because as of my experience, I continue playing Dota since the first time I've played the game. It's also because of the new strategies that you see in every game of some professionals that you've observed and you like to be as good as them so you continue playing to be better. HW2: DOTA Mechanics


                    The game DOTA has its different mechanics which is observe while playing the game. These mechanics includes unit statistics, armor and damage, manapoints and hitpoints, aand many more.

Unit Statistics

                                                 

                     This mechanic is based on the units(creeps) on how they are summon and how many units are  there per wave. However, this have some trigger informations regarding the spawning and upgrading of creeps, and spawn/upgrade trigger to roshan. Units were divided into 9 sections such as the lane creeps, super/mega creeps, normal neutral creeps, ancient neutral creeps, roshan, summons, towers, other buildings, and miscellaneous units.This mechanic focuses on the statistics of units in both teams as well as on neutrals. Damage and Armor

                       Damage and armor always come together because there are spells that the damages were reduced because of the armor as well as the magic resistances present on the hero. However, there are spells that damages are not reduces like the laser of tinker. Damage does always take the armor type into consideration, but sometimes it just isn't reduced.                         Hence, the damage dealt throughout the game are split into two(2) certain types: the attack and the damage type.They are completely separated and can be mixed into any combination.


                                              



                        The first one is the attack type which refers to the type of attack that was made to deal the damage. The different types of attacks that are used on units in DOTA are:hero, siege,chaos, normal and piercing. Damages dealt by these types of attacks could be reduced by the armor value,however,damages dealt by using magic abilities, which is referred as spells,another type of attack, were not reduced by armor values at all, but it can be reduced or blocked by magic immunity.

                         The second one is the damage type. It is another field of determining if the damage should even be further reduced or blocked. Damage types used in DOTA are: normal,magic and universal. The normal which is already mentioned before is the types of all attacks that makes damage, but being reduced by armor value. Magic which is also mentioned before is the most common ability damage type that makes the damage not being reduced by armor value except for magic immunity because this is completely reduced or blocked. However, the universal is almost like magic, but it is not reduced by either armor value or magic immunity. Hence the similarity of the two is that they both deal damage to units.

                         The armor just like the attack has two types: the former armor type which is fixed for all units and the used armor type which is the combination of armor type and attack type that determines the primary reduction in damage. The used armor has types in DOTA: hero, unarmored, fortified,  light, medium and heavy. The armor value can be changed by either items or abilities like the plate mail which increases the armor value of units and the ability acid cloud which decreases the armor value of units. However, the damage reduction given by armor value can be calculated by formulas: the positive armor value and the negative armor value.

                                                 

Positive armor values: (calculation provided by the article). 

 Damage Reduction = ( 0.06 * armor ) / (1 + 0.06 * armor)

Examples:
10 armor:
( 0.06 * 10 ) / ( 1 + 0.06 * 10 ) = 0.6 / 1.6 = 0.375 = 37.5%
20 armor:
( 0.06 * 20 ) / ( 1 + 0.06 * 20 ) = 1.2 / 2.2 = 0.545 = 54.5%

Negative armor values:(calculation provided by the article)


          Damage Increase = 1 - 0.94 ^ (-armor)
          Examples:
          -5 armor:
          1 - 0.94 ^ (--5) = 1 - 0.94 ^ 5 = 0.266 = 26.6%
           -10 armor:
           1 - 0.94 ^ (--10) = 1 - 0.94 ^ 10 = 0.461 = 46.1%


Negative armor has a cap of -20 (71% damage increase). Reducing the armor even more will not change the damage increase.


                                Hence, armor and damage get together in every game because damage caused by an attack will never be reduced if there isn't any armor. Damage and armor are linked in any field and never been separated.

                      What I don't know is that how players with good mathematical skills has an advantage to win the game. What advantages mathematical and statistical skills have in playing DOTA? How do people become very good on assuming the quantities that was not clearly given and yet the good players know that what they assume is correct? These things that I don't know can be answered by DOTA players. However, I need to have surveys and interviews to those people who has the answer to the things that I don't know.                      

                      With due respect to my research, I've also did some researches, survey, and interviews regarding my topic which helps me to accomplish my introduction of the research paper.  I am now continuing my research in order to come up with the next chapters of the paper ,so I've been working on it.  Despite of some difficulties on my research I'm sure that I can finish it cause I'm working on this paper.  Some of the information that I've gathered was not yet posted on my blog but I'm working on the improvement of my research which can lead to its success. However, I keep on gathering details that I can use for my blog for the research that I've been working with. Hence, I can say that I've accomplished some things with regards to my research paper.
